Students are roaming daily in social networks such as MySpace and Facebook, voicing their opinions in blogs, conducting research, and texting with their peers. These students have come to expect the around-the-clock access to information and services with limited guidance from others. To meet the expectations of the independent, technological student, teachers and librarians are faced with finding ways to incorporate online content and platforms into the teaching environment, whether the classroom is physical or virtual. Technological solutions, such as course management systems, have allowed educators and students to interact and share resources efficiently and the Web, for over a decade now, has expanded the reach of information beyond the library and geographical boundaries. So, where does the issue of copyright fit in this new paradigm? How do educators and librarians navigate the complexities of copyright exemptions in the academic setting? Please join Dru Zuretti, Copyright Education Manager at Copyright Clearance Center, in this Webinar where she will discuss these issues and suggest some best practices for working with copyrighted content in today’s Web 2.0 environment. Brand New Internet Pixsy Steals Lycos From Blinkx For Video Search?

We typically hear of Pixsy partnering with other media (usually video- or photo-sharing) sites to power their video and image search, and today the company is taking its offerings to a larger level. Pixsy has signed a distribution deal with Lycos, which will be using the image and video search tool to power search on its network and owned and operated properties and affiliates.
Lycos was previously using blinkx to power its video search, but it looks like the search company has shifted over to Pixsy a year later to try something new.

With this, Pixsy will be indexing Lycos’ library of images and videos under a branded multimedia search engine, with content that will be customized to each specific audience that resides throughout the Lycos network of online sites. One major goal with this type of custom search option is to create targeted advertising inventory, which is important as video is quickly becoming a medium of choice for online, distributed advertising campaigns.
Given Lycos’ recent signing of Wunderloop to handle its targeted advertising efforts on its network, it’s clear that Lycos is ramping up its efforts to monetize content in an effective manner for 2008.
Brand New Scripting I Freed Myself From E-mail’s Grip - So Much More Than Just E-mail!
Posted on Aug 29, 2008 07:42:26 PM
Today, As you may have guessed already, the last couple of days have been incredibly hectic over here, moving further along with my recent publication of the NYTimes article "I Freed Myself From E-Mail’s Grip", which I briefly blogged about it yesterday as well. The amount of buzz it is generating all over the place has kept me thinking whole day today on whether I should change the name of my blog to something like "Thinking out of the Inbox" and keep talking much more about this particular topic which seems to have hit the nerve quite nicely and with the right level of expectations to actually do something about it.So, while I am pondering about that (Feel free to add your two cents into the conversation on whether I should change its name or just keep things as they are at the moment), I thought I would go ahead today and, over the next couple of days as well (While the it is lively and hot!), comment on various different blog posts which have picked up on this very same subject and added further into the conversation. Hopefully adding some more into the overall discussion on whether "Thinking out of the Inbox" is doable or not. And if it is how do we bring it into the next level of interactions as far as knowledge sharing and collaboration are concerned. To get things going, I thought I would kick off this series of blog posts referencing another entry that one of my fellow IBM colleagues, Ed Brill, has published a couple of days back and which I thought you would also find it quite an interesting read, because it is one of those articles that advocates the usage of e-mail to some degree, although we agree on several things as well. I strongly encourage you all to have a read and then come back over here for my two cents of the discussion on a couple of important paragraphs that Ed has been mentioning over there. …

New Impressive Hulu Officially Launches Tomorrow
Posted on Aug 28, 2008 05:15:34 AM

Tomorrow marks the day Hulu, a Web-based television project first piloted last year by Fox and NBC, is to be taken out of limited-release and put into full-fledged public profile, reports The New York Times, proving weekend speculation true.
The two network partners are celebrating their grand opening by adding content gathered from the production houses of Warner Brothers Television Group and Lionsgate, as well as sports game recordings of the N.B.A., N.H.L., and N.C.A.A. The material gathered from the archives of the collegiate basketball association is perhaps the most voluminous addition to Hulu, with full-length recordings being uploaded of games that reach back as far as 25 years.
Hulu’s partners are evidently making every effort to secure a considerable amount of spotlight this year in the premium Web video space, with not only heavy investment being made in the venture’s core website but distribution partnerships that include AOL, MSN, Comcast, MySpace, and Yahoo. Though the new multi-network company has yet to convince the executives at Walt Disney (ABC) and CBS, the recruitment of which would undoubtedly offer considerably more weight to Hulu’s long-term business prospects, their names will perhaps be added to the board in a few months’ time. CBS, as many know very well, is the proprietor of two of the most successful television franchises currently in operation: “CSI” and “Survivor,” and would surely be a hot property to enhance the fortunes of the Hulu enterprise.
As I said in the lines above, the two big-name hold-out networks, ABC and CBS, are likely to submit to Hulu partnerships of their own in short order. My motivation for saying this is simple. Though they both presently operate standalone video portals of their own, there’s little reason to suspect that a partial migration to Hulu will occur. For one, Web video, despite its fresh-faced allure and burgeoning consumer demand, is one that is for the most part unprofitable for large networks now. Web advertising prices don’t yet amount to a valuation that can be considered amply supplemental to the networks’ present-day income. The tried-and-true standard broadcast and cable television mediums are by far the cash kinds of television at the moment. Therefore, as logic would have it, the more eyes they can reach online, in turn garnering more and more ad revenue, the better.

How best to reach more viewers on the Web? Concentration. They - ABC and CBS - presumably would amass considerably more attention by partaking in a concentrated effort like Hulu in an industry-wide push to turn their prospects on the Web lucrative.
All in all, Hulu’s Wednesday launch will bring more attention to the project, which will subsequently convince more to jump aboard. It is looking increasingly likely that Hulu will be on a noticeable growth trend this year. Whether it can gain enough momentum to make the leap from the red to the black, only greater hindsight and real-world statistical analysis will reveal.
I must say the news of the impending launch took me by surprise. As I said in an earlier post published this weekend, I imagined that Hulu’s promoters would make an official presentation later in the month. Clearly it has come sooner, and right in line with initial rumors circulated days ago. However mistaken my assumptions were, today’s advanced notice of the launch is a welcome one. Better sooner than later, eh?

Internet Quibblo Launches Collaborative Polling
Posted on Aug 26, 2008 06:33:53 PM
Today,

Ever wanted to conduct a poll across a range of websites? Say you’ve developed a sort of far-reaching camaraderie with other publishers, and you’d like to know what your respective visitorships think about various topics. How can you easily coordinate such an effort?
Pangea Media may have the answer. A self-professed online advertising and new-media company, Pangea runs a property called Quibblo, which specializes in user-generated quizzes and polls.
And today the site is debuting a new development that seeks to offer a convenient way to operate surveys across multiple venues on the Web. The name, very simply, is “Collaborative Polling.”
The way it works is also fairly straightforward. Those wishing to conduct polls or surveys can create a Quibblo widget to place on a site. Other site operators can then click the ‘Share’ function on the voting applet, and post it on their own desired pages. And as they pull in activity from their own reader pools, results can be quickly monitored through the ‘More’ tab. (On Quibblo.com, more details of results are displayed. An example of this can be found here.)
The convenience of collaborative polling as well as the ability to quickly distribute interconnected duplicates of surveys are what make this new feature of Quibblo’s particularly useful. Creating a single poll to display on a single website is one thing, and can be all too limiting for some users. Creating a single poll that can stretch across a half-dozen or more remote venues on the Web can prove significantly more effective and powerful.

So for me, all of my blog posts, my del.icio.us links, my StumbleUpon items, my Netflix queue, my GoodReads profile, and much much more are on a handy-dandy list that all of my Friends (both real life and virtual can view.) To take a look at my page, just stop by here. Perhaps I should warn you upfront about my strange taste in films. Ah well. The account is easy to set up and adding the different services is quite easy too. Slick as can be and lots of fun! (Source: Sites and Soundbytes)
