Software Microsoft Acquiring Mobile Social Software Maker Mobicomp

Posted on Aug 19, 2008 02:38:25 PM

Today,

microsoft

Microsoft announced today its intention to acquire mobile services and solutions specialist MobiComp, a company headquartered in Braga, Portugal and with international bases in the UK, Malaysia, and Dubai. MobiComp provides the mobile backup and data sharing solution MobileKeeper as well as Active mTicker, a system which delivers automated notifications via information subscriptions. Uses for mTicker can range from basic news alerts to advertising.

Financial details have not been disclosed. The deal is officially still pending. But the addition of MobiComp to Microsoft’s mobile business is likely to bring the software giant ample value. MobiComp presently maintains a partner list of 11 mobile operators worldwide, presumably in and around the abovementioned markets, therefore Microsoft’s effort to grow its share in the smartphone sector globally will perhaps be benefited somewhat with MobiComp’s infusion. The company’s MobileKeeper Sharing & Communities is particularly telling of what Microsoft might pursue much further development of for its mobile division.

As MobiComp describes it, MobileKeeper Sharing & Communities gives users the ability to “create, share and download content, while building their personal communities and networks or publish content direct to blogs and social networking sites such as Flickr and Hi5 on the move, with ease.”

Among the market gains MobiComp has so far accomplished is the quite substantial arrangement it secured with Portugal’s leading mobile services provider TMN. MobiComp has supplied a large portion of the carrier’s roughly 5 million subscribers with its Active mTicker provision, which TMN agreed in late 2006 to pre-install on all handsets sold to its customers.

Network Paramount Movie Clips To Be Shared On Facebook

Posted on Aug 18, 2008 07:54:20 AM

Today,

Paramount Logo

Facebook users are about to enjoy thousands of clips from the movie library of Paramount Pictures.

According to Ryan Nakashima of Associated Press, Fanrocket is launching a new Facebook app named VooZoo that will allow network users to send each others clips from their favorite movies from the available Paramount catalogue. The clips will stretch the entire history of one of the oldest Hollywood studios, and will range from a few seconds to several minutes in length. As time progresses, the tool will also be used to promote upcoming projects from the company, such as the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Fanrocket is talking with other studios, but seeing as it took Paramount a year to prepare the clips, it will be some time before any other films show up on the service.

At the end of each clip will be a button to purchase a DVD of the corresponding film.

Danny Kastner, the founder of Fanrocket, told the AP that he hopes to get a few hundred thousand users for the new service within two months of its launch. As for how much money Paramount hopes to make from this venture, luckily Paramount’s senior vice president of entertainment, Derek Broes, is realistic about it, saying “My benchmark for success is that people are joining and sending.”

Networking Mixercast Gets To $6m, Reveals More Plans For Widget Ads

Posted on Aug 15, 2008 06:32:23 PM

Admin wrote:

MixerCast has two major announcements today, one being that of its Series B round of funding, and the other being for its latest plans for a widget package that takes on the online advertising market.

The company’s latest round of funding totals $6 million, led by Intel Capital with participating investors ONSET Ventures and returning investor Velocity Interactive Group also taking part. MixerCast recently called down $4.25 million of a $5.57 million of this Series B round just over a month ago, and had a round of funding last summer for an additional $2.6 million that the company now has to take advantage of.

The upcoming widget advertising package, called the MCast Suite, will do much of the same things that other widget ad networks now do, but MixerCast is taking a broader, more integrated approach and supporting content from other widget networks, including Clearspring, RockYou and Slide, wrapping it all up into a single application that can be embedded all over the web.

With the widget ad market getting more and more competitive, will MixerCast’s approach work for the purposes of building on its existing revenue model, or even prove more encompassing than other widget ad networks? As online advertising increases across various platforms and includes every media type, the widget’s integrated capabilities are becoming quite attractive for advertisers, though we’re still seeing a good amount of experimentation towards this end. WidgetBucks was the latest to launch another way in which widget networks can be used for tracking and advertising purposes.

New Scripts Real People Don’t Have Time For Social Media

Posted on Aug 15, 2008 08:46:38 AM

Today,   ReadWriteWeb has a great article called Real People Don’t Have Time for Social Media. So are you the real folks who don’t have time or are you the information professional (anyone else HATE that term?) who has time? I think it’s a matter of priority. Is social networking online something that you prioritize in your life or not? And for those of us who rank firmly in the Community Director category and are immersed in social networks, how do we convey the value of them to those who don’t participate now? I have had success with an internal blog at the library I direct and with IM too. But if I reach much further into the world of social networking, I hit a wall where people get confused, fearful and start to shut down. How do we make the connection? How do we share our enthusiasm without threatening people’s library work, because that is often how these online applications are perceived. I listen, listen, listen, talk, talk, talk, encourage, listen some more, do demos, applaud successes, applaud failures, and listen some more. That’s the best I know how to do. I’m hoping some of you have ideas to bridge the gap in the profession and get us all speaking the same language and embracing the new technologies. (Source: Sites and Soundbytes)

Brand New Internet What Project Managers Should Know About Social Networking

Posted on Aug 13, 2008 02:25:34 AM

Today,  I’m currently finishing up an article for Reference & User Services Quarterly about Technoplanning in a Shiny, Social World. This post speaks to many of my thoughts about project managament in libraries with social tools:http://www.ddmcd.com/managing-technology/what-should-project-managers-know-about-social-media-and-soc.html Tools and expectations regarding the manner in which people in organizations communicate and collaborate are changing. I have to some extent addressed these issues in my “project management and blogging” research and consulting. The implications are broader than just blogging. While different groups and industries are accepting social media and social networking at very different rates, many organizations are also beginning to address how to adopt and manage social media and social networking. Such organizations are not limited to traditional tech-oriented and early adopter type firms. Those of us who have managed large projects know how important it is to carefully manage all project stakeholders, not just those directly assigned to the project full time. This is where social networking and collaboration tools can play a role, but the manner in which they impact both formal and informal communications needs to be considered. For example, there are certain top-down communications that need to be addressed to all or subsets of project staff. At the same time project team members will need — and want — to communicate with each other and with non-project staff on both project- and non-project-related matters. So far this situation is pretty standard. One thing that makes the new tools different (e.g., enterprise-secure blogging and wikis, collaboration tools with workflow and group collaboration features, group chat and messaging, document sharing, bookmark and link sharing tools, etc.) is that they are now so easy to set up, manage, and use. …
